The "New" New River March 04, 2010
I had an older gentlemen in our church tell me a couple of weeks ago; "Scott, in truth, our church is a year and a half old". I knew what he was saying. Since Renee and I have gotten here a year and a half ago, so much has happened, it truly is a "New" New River. So many people and families have made New River their church home; discipleship classes are now in full swing; city- wide Easter services have and will bless our community; new staff have been added and new vision has been birthed.. It encourages me to think that we are only a year and a half old, because there is still so much more to do. When the leadership changes, many times the vision and direction changes. What worked in the past sometimes does not work in the present. The leadership council is in the process of updating the church documents by which we are governed. The elder structure is being reexamined, our policy and procedures for our staff is in the process of being updated. Some of the systems currently in place are exactly what we need for where we are; others are a little outdated (some of our bylaws are taken from a denominational document written in 1964). I see my daughter at age 11 wishing she was 16; (God give me strength). I know what she is saying; "I want to be there NOW!". Grow into it. That is what I need to hear the Father say to me; "Grow into it. You're a year and a half old". And we are. We are working on bylaws for the church, policy and procedures for our staff and I hope God is growing me into the senior pastor that will make you proud. By the way, we have updated the church handbook and you can no longer leave your covered wagon by the front door!
