 CURRENT UPDATE ON ZAC

03/08

Last Friday during Therapy Zac did very well at responding and communicating. He is now able to nod yes and no with his head! He is also closing his mouth and swallowing and can stick his tongue out on command.

03/01

Sunday Zac returned back to The Courtyards from Harris Hospital. He was having trouble with his feeding tube again as well as his heart rate. They replaced his G/J stomach feeding tube, with a newer type to allow him to start giving him stomach feeds. This will hopefully get him over to total stomach feeding. Clear lungs and infections are being taken care of. Therapy should start back up with in the next few days!

02/20
Zac's temp and heart rate has been doing better. He has been very alert during this time. He should be moved back to The Courtyards soon.

02/19

Zac has been moved to room H605.

02/17

Test results show that Zac does have a Staff Infection.

02/16

Zac's heart rate came down today to 114 and his temp stayed down as well. He is resting better and has been awake and alert. He is starting to communicate more with his eyes and responding to flash cards. He is also moving his tongue and head more.

02/15
Zac is still at Harris Downtown in NICU Room 305.
Heart rate and temperature rose again this morning but is currently back down.
At this time we are unsure about what is causing this.

02/14
Zac was admitted to Harris around 8pm with an elevated heart rate at 155 and a temp of 101.3. His heart rate and temp kept rising and dropping. Zac was moved to the NTICU to get stabilized and to propose a plan of diagnosis to eliminate infections or neurological complications.

02/06
Zac is back in his room and doing fine. They were able to fix the clog without surgery. He is still holding his head up more and more, and getting stronger!

02/05

Zac's feeding tube became clogged and he is headed to Harris Hospital to see what they can do to help the situation. Please pray that they can unclog it without surgery!

02/03

Zac has been holding his head up on his own alot more lately.
Today he held it up four times for almost a minute. Zac has started to experience pain more and this is a good sign because it shows he is becoming more responsive.

02/01

Zac is doing well and adjusting to his new enviroment! He is beginning to swallow more.
He is currently struggling with pnemonia in his right lung.

***Would you like to volunteer to sit with Zac during the day? We are in need of people who are able to take some time out of their day to spend with Zac.

Please contact or the church office 817.964.8302 for more info.

01/27

Zac has been moved to room 44. Please update your address book!

01/24

Zac has been moved to The Courtyards at Fort Worth located at 8001 Western Hills Blvd. Room #44 Fort Worth, TX 76108. He is doing well and seems to be adjusting to his new home and staff. It seems his new Dr. and therapists are really nice and well qualified to take care of all his needs. During physical therapy on Friday he held his head up on his own for 32 seconds which is a first! Please keep praying that Zac will continue his swallowing and stay infection free so the Lord may perform a miracle and that he would have a great testimony.

01/14
Zac has a discharge date of Monday the 18th.
He will be moved to either Weatherford Health-care or back to Kindred SW in Fort Worth.
Zac now how his new custom wheelchair!
New River Fellowship donated $2000 towards the $6000 wheelchair.
The family is very grateful for the support shown by the New River Family!
The Dr. is trying a patch over one of his eyes to see if it will help with his sight.
Please be praying that Zac is moved to the best place for his recovery and care.

01/07

Zac has started to swallow alot more!
He got a new hair cut yesturday and his skull is healing well.

(Zac's roommate who is now walking! He was in the same shape as Zac when he arrived at BIR.)

12/13

Zac's stomach tube is doing really well and we are hopeful that he will begin to gain weight again.

12/11

After Zac's first session of Therapy he had an appointment with the DARS
representative to go over the paperwork and qualifying. While resting
in his bed waiting to go back down for therapy his heart raced
up very high, from 122-217. The Dr. put him on IV Fluids and
his HR came back down within a couple of hours.
His eye Dr. came to check the status of his left eye and decided to
change the treatment plant to have an eye specialist to
come tomorrow and look at him and he might stitch
his eye shut on the outside edge to keep it shut. He is not blinking so he's
not able to keep his eye lubed. The cornea is starting to deteriorate and
the Dr. wants to make sure there is no permanent scaring.

12/10

There has been a change of plans with Zac moving.
He will not be moving to Baylor today because
his white blood cell count is up.

Check back for updates on this....

11/07

On Monday November 9th Zac will be moving to Baylor in Dallas!
More details will come as soon as the move is finished.

11/03

Zac is doing well. He has no infections or sickness.
He is still looking around and following movements.
Although his movements are limited and inconsistant we are still very thankful!

10/29

Well, the day has finally come when we can report some "official" news about Zac.
According to Dr. Lee, Zac has come out of the coma.
Praise God!!!
Now, for what that means in real life-
Zac opens his eyes more, and wider than before.
He responds by blinking when something approaches his eye.
He blinks when his eyelashes are touched.
He tries to track movement, but can't quite do that yet.
All of this adds up to the fact that he is no longer in the coma.
He still has a long way to go, so keep praying!!!!
They are going to increase medications that cause alertness

10/25

Please consider visiting Zac!
All you have to do is contact the church office(817.341.7970),
schedule a time with Melissa OR contact Fred.
It is very important you have a time scheduled.
Zac can only have visitors on the hour for a certain amount of time.
Fred and Zac are waiting to hear from you!

10/23

Zac is feeling much better now! He is now able to have visitors again!
Please contact Fred to schedule a time to visit Zac!

10/22

Zac's fever has broke! Please keep praying.

10/20

Zac has pneumonia caused by MRSA.
This is a highly resistant strain of staph that is hard to get rid of and very contagious!
They have changed his antibiotic after getting the culture and sensitivity tests back.
He has a sore over his tailbone that is not healing as well as the doctors would like,
so they have to keep him off of his back. He is not gaining weight,
because he can't tolerate the amount of feeding that would support weight gain.

He is very sick, so he doesn't seem as responsive.
By responsive, I mean opening his eyes and seeming to try to focus on people. He has NOT come out of the coma.
Zac needs our constant prayers!

Please do not try to visit him right now.
This pneumonia is caused by a bacteria that is contagious.
Everyone has to wear gowns, gloves, and masks, and still this bug can manage to get around!
Zac has to be protected from other infections that he could get, and we have to be protected from what he has.

Thank you all for continuing strong in the faith, and for praying for Zac's healing!!
Thank God now for what we are believing is coming for Zac.

10/16

Well, Zac had been doing really well in his new environment until yesterday.
He now has pneumonia again. He was really congested last night.
They have put the oxygen back through his trach, so he is not able to vocalize as much.
He was making noises- moans and such.
He DID open his eyes yesterday, which is something he has been doing.
But yesterday he seemed to be trying to focus on things.
That is a first!!! They gave him a new medicine to try to get him to "emerge" from the coma.
Praise God for that new sign!
Pray that Zac gets well super fast,
and that he suffers NO setbacks from the pneumonia.

10/13

Zac is doing well!
It has now been over a week since Zac was officially off the ventilator.
He has done well overall this week, with a couple of times when it seems he opens his eyes in response to someone being there.
He has had his trach capped off today with a temporary cap and has oxygen by nasal cannula, like anyone else would wear.
They recently did a CT Scan and it came back good with no problems. He is infection free!
Zach has been responding and moaning and we are seeing God work everyday in him!

T-Shirts are available at Family Power Sports in Weatherford for $20! Get yours today!

10/06

Zac is still off of the ventilator!
Please pray for his blood pressure to remain stable.
If you would like to schedule a time to visit please do so by
calling Fred Chapman or by calling the church office
at 817.341.7970 and ask for Melissa.

10/04

It's official!! Zac has remained off the ventilator for over 72 hours, so it has been taken out of his room!!!
God is so awesome!
Thank you, God, for Your amazing answers to our prayers!

Zac is still in a coma, but they are giving him medications that are to help him emerge.
Pray that he starts to respond to the medications.
He is tolerating his tube feedings now, so maybe he will gain a little weight.

9/24

Zac is coming home to Texas Tuesday!
He has been accepted in the LTAC in south Fort Worth.
The family asks that we all refrain from visits until a few things happen.
Zac needs to adjust to the new facility and the routine; the staff needs to get used to him and his unique needs;
the family needs time to visit with him alone. There are several family members that have not seen Zac yet.
Zac also cannot be over-stimulated right now.

Please continue to pray for him; for his flight home;
the staff at both facilities as he is transitioning. Also for the family.

9/21

Please continue to pray for Zac's breathing.
It is the biggest obsticle he must overcome.

9/17

Please continue to pray for Zac's breathing.
He is once again struggling to breathe over the ventilator and is not doing so at all as of today.
We are waiting to see where he will be moved for further care. Pray, pray, pray!

9/15

Zac started breathing over the ventilator this afternoon at 5pm our time!!
Zac has continued to breathe over the vent for the last 4 hours! Praise God!! (He hasn't done that in almost 2 weeks.)
They are still trying to restart his tube feeding, but have turned it off again for a while because he isn't digesting it.

Pray for Zac's continued healing & improvement; wisdom in the decisions for his upcoming move to a different facility;
and faith, strength and encouragement for all of the family.

9/14

Please note that Zac has changed rooms so his mailing
address has changed. The new room number is #993.

He is showing improvement with the fight against infections but he
is still not breathing on his own over the ventilator.

9/11

Zac's surgery went well.
We need prayers specifically for his breathing.
Fred wants to express how much he loves reading all the cards you have sent to Zac.
Continue to pray and send your support for Zac and his family.

9/09

Tomorrow at 1:30pm Zac will be having surgery to put in the shunt that will replace the tubes in his brain.
Please continue to pray for Zac's breathing as he has been struggling with it since his fever.

9/04

View the flyer for another opportunity to support Zac and his family HERE!
The benefit is being held at First Monday Trade Days in Weatherford.
Info about the event here http://ci.weatherford.tx.us/index.aspx?NID=883

9/02

Zac is doing about the same. Please continue to pray that the infections stay away.
Fred wants to express to everyone how grateful he is for the support and prayers.
God has given him amazing strength and hope. He has also had many opportunities
to pray for others and witness to those around him at the hospital!
Monday is Zac's 20th birthday. You may send cards to the address listed above!

 9/01

Did you miss out on the Benefit for Zac? If so make sure you swing by Family Power Sports and pick up a Prayer Band!
The infection that Zac was struggling with has cleared. He will remain on antibiotics until 9/09. After that time there will be a
waiting period until 9/16 to see if the infection remains cleared. If so, they will insert the shunt.
Zac has been showing progress in his responsiveness. He now has some small eye movements and has been stretching out his right arm.
He responds with movement when Fred enters his room in the mornings. Continue with your prayers - they are working!
**Please note that the address for cards has changed above.

8/27

Zac is currently being treated for an infection. Once the infection is clear they will be placing a ventricular shunt in his brain. This shunt will be permanent and used to replace the current drainage tubes. Zac is currently breathing on his own with the ventilator - the ventilator is on as an emergency backup.

Don't forget about the Benefit this Saturday!! Details at top of page!

8/25

Monday night Zac had a set back. The brain began swelling and doctors replaced one of the tubes to drain fluid. He is resting better today and fever is normal for his injury.

8/24

Zac struggled this weekend with his fever. Everything else remains the same. He is still in a coma.
At this time we are working on getting him home. Please help by donating money, purchasing a prayer band, or by attending the benefit.

8/19

Zac had surgery today to place an umbrella filter in which will keep blood clots from forming. They have also removed the tubes from Zac’s brain because the pressure has stopped rising. Zac’s heart rate and fever are now normal.

8/18

They will be doing surgery soon to place an “Umbrella” (filter) that prevents blood clots. We are still waiting for the tubes to be removed. Zac's breathing has remained steady with the back-up assistance of the ventilator.

You may also submit donations directly to Fred through paypal at
FLCHAPMAN @ GMAIL.COM
(Please Remove Spaces When Entering Email Address Into Paypal)

8/17

Zac is currently breathing off the ventilator. The blood clot blocking the brain stem is starting to diminish, so the spinal fluid drainage is starting to slow down. They will soon be able to remove the 2 tubes in his brain.  They will also be putting feeding tubes in and performing a tracheotomy today. There are lots of small improvements, but the doctors recognize that this will be a long process.

Fred has been very touched by the amount of people praying and helping out financially with the medical bills that are accumulating. He would like to thank everyone for the comfort and hope he has found in all of the support being given.

8/14

Zac is currently being treated for Pneumonia and is still comatose. The fever is working it's way down. Please continue to pray.

08/13 11:30am

Zac'sstatushasnot changed much. Heart rate & temperature stable. He had developed an infection in his mouth, but is on antibiotics. He is being given nutrition as well. The EEG did not show any seizure activity, but little to no brain activity at this point, which could change with decrease in swelling. Continue to pray for his healing, free of infection.

The family is doing well. They look to be returning to their respective homes Friday. All of them except Fred. He will remain with Zac. Pray for his faithand strength to be sustained and to continue to lean on God in his decision-making.

8/12

Zac is undergoing an EEG.
